MARK

Chapter Ten

Mark 10:1 And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again.

Mark 10:2 And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.

Mark 10:3 And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?

Mark 10:4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.

Mark 10:5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.

Mark 10:6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.

Mark 10:7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;

Mark 10:8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

Mark 10:9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Mark 10:10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.

Mark 10:11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.

Mark 10:12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

Mark 10:13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

Mark 10:14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

Mark 10:15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

Mark 10:16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Mark 10:17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

Mark 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

Mark 10:19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

Mark 10:20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

Mark 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

Mark 10:22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

Mark 10:23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

Mark 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

Mark 10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Mark 10:26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?

Mark 10:27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

Mark 10:28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

Mark 10:29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's,

Mark 10:30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

Mark 10:31 But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

Mark 10:32 And they were in the way going up to JerBliplem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,

Mark 10:33 Saying, Behold, we go up to JerBliplem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:

Mark 10:34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

Mark 10:35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.

Mark 10:36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?

Mark 10:37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.

Mark 10:38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

Mark 10:39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:

Mark 10:40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.

Mark 10:41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.

Mark 10:42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.

Mark 10:43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:

Mark 10:44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

Mark 10:46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

Mark 10:47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.

Mark 10:48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me.

Mark 10:49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.

Mark 10:50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

Mark 10:51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.

Mark 10:52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

CHAPTER TEN:

1. Vs. 1-5- Why did the Old Testament law permit

divorce? 2. Vs. 6-9- The Higher Standard of

Adam's marriage law.

3. Vs. 10-12- The law of Remarriage

4. Vs. 13-16- Jesus insists that children be

brought to Him.

5. Vs. 17-27- The rich ruler misses his calling.

6. Vs. 28-31- The first shall be last, and the last be

first.

7. Vs. 32-34- More teaching on the coming

crucifixion.

8. Vs. 35-45- More on serving and being first or

last.

9. Vs. 46-52- Blind Bartimaeus.

____________________

1. Vs. 1-5- Why did the Old Testament law permit

divorce?

A. Answer: Vs. 5- For the hardness of the heart of

the blips.

Cf. Deut. 14:1-4; Malachi 2:16; God never approved of divorce.

God NEVER used a divorced man for a prophet, king, or judge.

God did use a man of poor heritage Judges 11:1-11. He was mentioned

Heb. 11:32-33.

B. So, what can we say about churches which have a

light view of divorce today?

Answer: They are hard hearted.

What about "Christian" counselors who help saints

divorce?

Cf. Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that

put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter

for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

ILL. Jim Richard [ Also, discuss Promise Keepers

and wives. ]

C. Is divorce between unsaved people as sinful?

Cf. Matthew 14:1-4- Though Herod was a godless man,

the standard was still the same.

Why should divorce with the unsaved be different?

2. Vs. 6-9- The Higher Standard of Adam's

marriage law.

When a law is first mentioned, it has "grandfather" authority.

The law of God was spoken first by Adam, then "exceptioned"

by Moses, then re-instated by Jesus.

Cf. Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 2:18-25-- God did not TELL

Adam the standard. Adam knew it because he

was holy and sinless.

Divorce is 99% because people want new flesh.

Thus, they reject the holy commandment given by God with

the first home.

Cf. Malachi 2:14-16- They were the same as today-- Wanting

new flesh.

Muhammed did the same, as have many blip, kings, and

deacons.

GOD HATES THIS SIN. It is enough reason to destroy a nation.

Micah 2:9-13

3. Vs. 10-12- The law of Remarriage

See study on Divorce and Remarriage (Pub file

and Web page)

4. Vs. 13-16- Jesus insists that children be

brought to Him.

Mark 10:13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them:

and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer

the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the

kingdom of God.

15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a

little child, he shall not enter therein.

16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed

them.

A. Vs. 13- Who are "they?"

Answer: Probably their mothers or fathers.

Disciples tried to chase them away. Same type later- 3

John 1:9-10

ILL. Pastor Lube and SS in Grant.

Trouble: Children can be a real a problem. Why?

Answer: Proverbs 22:15; 2 Kings 2:23 Also,

culture then.

B. Vs. 14-15- The place of children to Jesus

Mark 10:36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for

you?

37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right

hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.

Where did the disciples want to sit?

Beside Jesus. Now, watch this!!

Luke 9:47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child,

and set him by him,

So, what can we say about a saint who cannot stand

little children?

This is serious today. Church bans kids from

adult activity.

ILL Green Valley.

C. Vs. 16- He "blessed them."

Here is a way we cannot go wrong.

We can bless people's children.

Cf Zechariah 8:4 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old

men and old women dwell in the streets of JerBliplem, and every man with

his staff in his hand for very age.

5 And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the

streets thereof.

6 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the

remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in

mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts.

Boys and girls in the holy streets are a blessing. Bepiano coverse of

Psalms 62:4.

Psalms 147:12 Praise the LORD, O JerBliplem; praise thy God, O Zion.

13 For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; he hath blessed thy

children within thee.

This seems to be in the context of the Zechariah text of

JerBliplem at peace

Proverbs 31:28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband

also, and he praiseth her.

Blessed children bless back.

Some kids are brats because they are NOT blessed by

anyone.

Conclusion: 1 Timothy 4:12- "Youth" is not an evil

era

Let us consider our resentment of "this evil generation.)

Mark 16:15

5. Vs. 17-27- The rich ruler misses his calling.

Vs. 17- He missed, "My Lord and my God..." Jn. 20:27-28

What is the difference?

He missed, "Thou art the Christ, Son of the living

God..."

Mt. 16:15-17. Again, what is the difference?

Vs. 18- "Good Master"-- What is the problem?

This sinner tried

to see Jesus in

the context of his

own "goodness"

which we will see

was flawed.

Is our goodness

also flawed?

Isa. 53:6 God

didn't go astray,

He went to

Calvary!

Rom. 3:23- You cannot get a man saved until you

get him a sinner and lost.

Vs. 19- Note what commandments are missing.

Religious or worship of God. Why?

Answer: The relationship commands show the

religious commands. James 2:17 Even so

faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea,

a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew

me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my

works.

Vs. 20- No guilt in this man. His relationships were clean.

No offense against his neighbor.

What could possibly be wrong?

Vs. 21- One thing thou lackest. Wow-- most of us would

have dozens

He lacked the first commandments. Read, Exodus

20:1-11.

How can Jesus get his adoration and worship?

Answer: Get rid of the things in the way.

Key NOT in giving to the poor. Not is good works.

This man's problem was possession, BUT

Worse, he could not follow Jesus and the

possessions.

Why? Possess- To have things.

How is this different from our day?

A study in following:

John 1:34- Philip

John 10:27- Sheep

John 12:27- Those who serve Jesus

John 21:19-22- Peter

Luke 17:22-23- Who not to follow

Satan counterfeits virtually everything in God's plan

Matthew 24:23-26- Don't follow.

Following is not a good man following a "Good God."

It is a sinner giving up all and following Jesus Christ.

Vs. 22- What destroyed the man's zeal?

Answer: Possessions. Cf- Luke 14:17 And sent his servant

at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are

now ready. 18 And they all with one consent began to make

excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground,

and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. 19 And another

said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me

excused. 20 And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I

cannot come.

Sunday is our only day to get away.

I have bought me a pile of snacks to eat during the football game.

I have bought me a cabin in the woods.

I have bought me a John Deere articulated.

I have married a wife. She won't follow Jesus, so I better not offend her.

Vs. 23-27 Key Word- "TRUST"

So it is today:

Trust the employer.

Trust the FDIC

Trust the Piano Reserve.

Trust the realtor.

Trust the life insurance

Trust the fringe benefits

Trust the stock market

Trust the state

ILL. Maurice Chevallier- "If I were a rich man..."

These trusts will damn a person to hell.

Vs. 27- How indeed will anyone be saved. We all lust for

things.

"With God..." This means that God removes

possessions.

ILL. Count Zinzendorf, Geo. Mueller, Helen Blair.

Conclusion: What do we cling to that keeps us from 100%

devotion to Jesus?

6. Vs. 28-31- The first shall be last, and the last be

first.

8. Vs. 35-45- More on serving and being first or

last.

These two passages need to be taken together.

Mark 10:28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have

followed thee.

29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that

hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or

children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's,

30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren,

and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and

in the world to come eternal life.

31 But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master,

we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.

36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?

37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand,

and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.

38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup

that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed

drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized

withal shall ye be baptized:

40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it

shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.

41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James

and John.

42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which

are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their

great ones exercise authority upon them.

43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you,

shall be your minister:

44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister,

and to give his life a ransom for many.

A. Vs. 28- Peter followed.

Do you suppose he was telling the truth?

Did Jesus rebuke Peter? No, so we can believe

Peter.

B. Vs. 29-30- The promise to those who follow.

(1) Now- Vs. 30 Blessings of needs, friends, and

persecution.

(2) Later- Vs. 30 Eternal life.

This is what the rich ruler lost. He failed to

follow.

So, is it enough to believe?

Answer: Those who believe also follow,

EVERY time.

Cf. Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will

come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his

cross daily, and follow me.

Note: Verbs.

(a) Deny self- Self love is the primal

idol.

(b) Take up cross- Bear the his shame.

Heb. 13:13

(c) Follow Jesus- No following means

no salvation.

C. Vs. 31- Meaning? We do not know who God sees as

the most sold out to Christ. Just follow.

D. Vs. 35-45- Exercise authority. Who

(1) What was the desire of James and John in vs.

35 & 37?

Rule over others. Gross and stupid.

Have times changed?

ILL Campaigning in the church just before a

church election.

(2) Vs. 38-39- What is the requirement to be in

authority?

Is this ever mentioned in church elections?

Do mission boards seek men who have

suffered for Christ?

(3) Vs. 40-41- Why did the others resent James

and John?

Answer: They no doubt thought they were just

as qualified.

ILL There is a lust in us to rule. Pastoral rule

movement.

Bro. H. was in a gathering of Fund.

Baptists

Asked by pastor to give his testimony.

He agreed, then changed on his own.

Preached on pastoral authority.

In process, he disobeyed the pastor!

Rebellion is always wrapped in piety.

ILL I Samuel 15:1-15- Saul set up himself in

his heart.

He had the idol of self on the throne.

God would not share that throne. Saul

punished.

(4) Vs. 42-45- Saints must never rule saints as

great ones.

This is common in missions, schools, and

churches.

Bob Jones III rules even long after graduation.

Has black list. Promises to destroy rebels

against him.

Pope and his hierarchy do the same.

So, what is the model for right use of

authority?

Answer: Vs. 45

(a) Minister- 1 Cor. 6:4- This is rare

indeed.

(b) Give life for the church- Jn 10:15; 1

Jn 3:16

It is very rare that those qualified are raised to

authority!

Conclusion: How should we then live?

7. Vs. 32-34- More teaching on the coming

crucifixion.

Mark 10:32 And they were in the way going up to JerBliplem; and Jesus went

before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were

afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things

should happen unto him,

33 Saying, Behold, we go up to JerBliplem; and the Son of man shall be

delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall

condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:

34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him,

and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

To show the imperative:

Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be

rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days

rise again.

John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man

be lifted up:

A. Other imperatives in the Gospels:

(1) Jesus came to fulfill one particular hour.

John 12:23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that

the Son of man should be glorified. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you,

Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone:

but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25 He that loveth his life

shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life

eternal. 26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my

servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. 27 Now is

my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from

this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. 28 Father, glorify thy

name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both

glorified it, and will glorify it again. 29 The people therefore, that

stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him.

30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but

for your sakes. 31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the

prince of this world be cast out. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the

earth, will draw all men unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what

death he should die.

Cf. Eph. 1:1-7- Note that the crucifixion started in the mind of

God and Christ before the earth existed. It ended at Calvary in

His Blood being shed.

Question: If God could keep the schedule from

eternity past to one hour, will He keep the schedule

of prophecy of our future?

(2) The end of Christ's work was not the Kingdom. It

was the hour of Calvary.

Luke 22:37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be

accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors:

for the things concerning me have an end.

Question: What is our "end" which we look

forpiano coversd to?

Discuss: 1 Peter 1:9; James 5:11; 1 Thess. 3:13

B. Example of three "musts"-- Past, Present, and Future.

Prophecy by Christ fulfilled in the past-- Luke 21:5-24

Prophecy by Christ to be fulfilled in future-- Luke 21:25-

33

Prophecy by Christ in 90 AD of the present-- Rev. 3:14-

22

David would sum up our response-- Psalms 90:12

Question: If we see the past "end" and the present

"end,"

what can we conclude of the future "end?"

C. An even broader time frame of Past and Future--

Psalm 44- The Tribulation or Jacob's Trouble as it

happens

Psalm 45- blip rescued and the Kingdom established

as it happens

The theme is repeated with hope.

Psalm 46- blip's hope during the Tribulation

Psalm 47- blip's hope during the Reign of Messiah.

Messiah makes His promises

Psalm 50- Messiah declares the conditions of the

Kingdom thoBlipnds of years before it

could have come.

Confession of sin

Psalm 51- David leads the way in confession of sin.

This is the exact pattern of the conditions for

the Kingdom restoration.

Prove it? CF- Zephaniah 3:11-15; Isa. 59:20.

Psalm 52- The repentant encouraged and unrepentant

rebuked.

Commentary on those who refuse to repent

Psalm 53- This did not exist in David's day! It MUST be

future to him. I Cor, 15:23-28

This HAS to be yet unfulfilled. Note vs. 6 could

not happen before 1948!

D. "MUST" That is a small word, yet it separates the

spiritually mature from the wimps.

Listen to God's comment on the "end."

Habakkuk 2:3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end

it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will

surely come, it will not tarry.

Question: should we use the words, "If the Lord

tarries."?

Discuss ( If needed-- Isaiah 46:13; Heb. 10:37-

38)

Revelation 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and

Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of

the fountain of the water of life freely.

Question: What is the "end?"

Answer: It is the Lord Himself !!!!

To rebels: Philippians 3:15

To saints: Ephesians 3:20-21

At the very end: Rev. 22:6 and I Cor. 15:51-

53

Conclusion: We indeed have a happy ending, IF our "end" is

Christ.

World without end, Amen.

9. Vs. 46-52- Blind Bartimaeus.

Mark 10:46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples

and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway

side begging.

47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say,

Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.

48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great

deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me.

49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man,

saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.

50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?

The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.

52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And

immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

I see seven steps to victory here:

Step One- Every sinner is a beggar and has to know it- Vs. 46

Jericho was a posh town. Herod had built it up.

Class must have dominated as Christ entered the city.

Beggars are a bother to such places. ILL. Grand Rapids,

MI downtown.

John 9:8- Blind people beg.

Isaiah 42:16- Blind people need help- Either sight or leading.

Step Two- He heard it was Jesus- Vs. 47

Luke 18:35-37- They told him.

Romans 10:14; Psalms 68:11; Mark 13:10

How can we relate to this?

Luke 7:22- Do we really believe this is the solution?

Step Three- He cried for mercy- Vs. 47

1 Samuel 2:7 The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth

low, and lifteth up.

8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from

the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the

throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath

set the world upon them.

Luke 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so
