PIANO TUNING DEVICES

Piano Tuning Meters are costly, but they can save money
over the years, and they can be used to check up on the piano
tuner's work.  They can also be very useful in tuning any other
instrument.  Virtually all of the orchestral instruments can be
tuned with a good piano tuning meter.

Here are the Piano Tuning Meters we offer. I hope to add other
choices with time, but I refuse to carry meters which I cannot
prove are reliable and worth the money. So, the choice is sparse,
but I believe these are among the best Tuning Meters on the
market. Please feel free to SEND E-MAIL with your questions.

Steve, the piano tuner, also does his own chimney sweeping.

KORG CA-40

KORG'S NEW CA-40
TUNER SUPPORTS ALL
ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTS
AND PIANO TUNING

We are the only supplier who requires the
Korg clip-on mic be included in the package.
Why? We know you will tune more of the
potential scale this meter can hear if you use
the clip-on mic. The combo price is set to make
this a very desirable choice.

This meter is Korg's very recent upgrade from the CA-30. The aspect which caused us to jump on this one is that
Korg has added equal temperament to this meter. There is virtually NO meter on earth with equal temperament
for this price. The Korg OT-120M below is still great step up if you want other temperaments and the Sound Back
feature to set the starting point of the tuning of an old piano which cannot be raised to A-440 for old age reasons.

Specifications:

Tuning: 12 note equal-tempered
Detection range: A0 (25.70Hz) - C8 (4186.01Hz) *
This means the whole piano scale except for the
lowest three notes is covered. No other meter at this
price can do this. The lowest three notes can be tuned
by ear by listening to the beats.
Reference tone out: C4 (261.33Hz) - C5 (523.25Hz),
One octave (Built-in Speaker)
Tuning modes: Meter (auto), Sound (manual)
Calibration: 410 - 480Hz (1Hz steps)
Tuning accuracy: +/-1cent
Sound accuracy: +/-1.5cent
Connection jack: Input jack (1/4" mono)
Power supply: Two AAA batteries 3V
Battery life: Approximately 100 hours
Dimensions: 4.1"(104mm) Wide x 2.52"(64mm) Deep x 0.6(15mm) High
Weight: 2.86 oz (81g) (Including the batteries)
Included items: Owner's Manual, (2) AAA batteries

* Even if the pitch is within the detection range, detection may not be
possible for instrumental sounds that contain a large number of
overtones or have a rapid decay. By overtones, we mean the secondary
sounds made on better quality pianos. Though desirable and sought after
by most musicians, these overtones may confuse the meter in the highest
end of its hearing range, perhaps the last four notes.

Clip On Mic Included in the price of the meter-- Korg CM-100:
Pictured below with the Korg OT-120M meter.

This mic clips onto some fixed part of the piano and takes the vibrations directly by contact. It can be used to tune
through background noise, which this mic will not hear. I have never had to replace one of these mics. They seem
to be indestructible. This mic makes it possible to tune other instruments of the orchestra and band while in a
noisy setting by clipping on to a solid part of the instrument.

Read Korg's write up on the meter at their company site.

If you see our competition pricing this meter well below ours,
it is because they do not include the added clip-on Mic.
Beware of tricky Web Stores which show the mic in the photo
but charge extra for the mic.

KORG TM-40
TUNING METER
AND METRONOME COMBO

KORG'S TM-40 IS IDEAL FOR
BAND USE, AND PIANO TUNING
IS SUPPORTED JUST AS EASILY
AND ACCURATELY AS THE OTHER
KORG METERS WE SELL

<<<< The graphic size is exagerated.

Korg tuners and metronomes are acclaimed around the world for their extremely high accuracy
and superb features. A great lesson and practice tool, the TM-40 offers both tuner and metronome
functions simultaneously or independently. Its large LCD-type needle delivers both the accuracy
of an LCD and the excellent visibility of a needle indicator. It also has LED indicators that show
pitch deviation or blink to indicate the tempo, making the TM-40 a highly visual tool.

The key to piano tuning it to have Equal Temperament. This meter has this as a default tuning.

With a detection range of C1 (32.70 Hz) - C8 (4186.01 Hz), the TM-40 can hear the whole piano
scale except for the lowest 3 notes. We suggest you learn to do the lowest five or six notes by
ear anyway, so this meter fills a need at a very reasonable price.

Tuner Section: Scale: 12 note equal temperament is the default tuning mode

Detection Range: C1 (32.70Hz) to C8 (4186.01Hz) for a sine wave

Reference Aural Tone: C4 (261.63Hz) to C8 (523.25Hz) One octave or A Bb

Tuning Modes: Meter mode (AUTO), Sound Out mode (MANUAL)

Calibration Range for Offsetting a Tuning: A4 = 410Hz to 480Hz

Detection Accuracy: Better than plus or minus 1 cent

Sound Accuracy: Better than plus or minus 1 cent

Dimensions: 4.45" (W) x 3.03" (D) x 0.71" (H) 113 (W) x 77 (D) x 18 (H) mm

UNIQUE TUNING FEATURE OF THIS METER:
Pure Major Third and Minor Third Interval Markings

When intervals of a third are played out of tune in the context of a brass band, orchestra, or other ensemble, it is
particularly noticeable. But those intervals can be made to blend more pleasantly by slightly adjusting them (relative
to the equal-tempered pitch) to a pure major or minor third. The TM-40's meter scale provides markings to indicate
pitches of a pure major and pure minor third relative to a selected pitch. By tuning your instrument so that the meter's
indicator needle points to these markings, you can ensure beautiful harmonies when playing in an ensemble. This
capability is very useful not only for wind instruments, but also for vocal or a cappella practice. This feature will thus
support Baroque musical tunings.

* The appropriate note to adjust when tuning to a pure major/minor third will depend on the music you are playing.

METRONOME FEATURE:
The metronome section offers convenient functions for practicing a variety of music.

Beat mode

Choose from preset patterns. Beat mode lets you choose a preset tempo and time signature,
and Tap mode lets you specify your own tempo. Contains a large speaker for a clear and distinct
metronome sound.

Thirteen rhythm variations

Thirteen types of rhythms cover 0 - 7 beats per measure as well as doublets, triplets, triplets with
center beats omitted, quadruplets, and quadruplets with center beats omitted.

Tempo is easily adjustable in a range of 40 - 208 beats per minute (bpm).
Rhythms, such as triplets/quadruplets with center beats omitted, cover a wide range of styles
from classical to rock and jazz.

When using the Tuner and Metronome functions simultaneously, triplets, triplets with center
beats omitted, quadruplets, and quadruplets with center beats omitted are not available.

Tempo Adjustment Options

When you adjust the tempo setting, you can choose that the tempo value will increment or
decrement either in "full-step" mode (steps of a single unit) or "pendulum-step" mode (steps of
several units as on a mechanical metronome). Choose the mode that you prefer.

Set the Tempo with the Tap Function

The Tap Tempo function lets you set the desired tempo by pressing the Metronome mode
START/STOP button at the desired timing in a range of 40 - 208 bpm. This makes it easy when
practicing to a song that you don't know the tempo of, such as a recording on CD.

Memory Backup

With the Memory Backup feature, the TM-40 remembers your Tempo, Beat, Calibration, and
Reference Pitch settings even when powered-off.

KORG OT-120M

KORG'S OT-120M
TUNER SUPPORTS ALL
ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTS
AND PIANO TUNING

We are the only supplier offering the OT-120M
versus the OT-12. This means you get the clip
on mic for the price below. The new meter also
DOES have the built in mic as well.

OUR FAVORITE METER HAS BEEN UPGRADED:
The Korg OT-120M (above) is being replaced with the Korg OT-120M (below).
The new meter is identical to the old model as far as performance is concerned,
but it is small, stands up on a music desk safer, and comes with a soft carrying
case. The display background colors are greatly improved in contrast.

IF YOU HAVE OUR CD, IT INCLUDES A CHART FOR DOING THE STRETCH
WITH THIS METER IN THE TREBLE AND THE BASS WHILE USING THIS METER.
Includes eight stretch choices for any size piano.
Feel free to print a copy of the stretch chart for use as you tune.
Print version of the stretch chart also available for $4

Engineered for precise pitch accuracy, versatile functionality, and with careful attention paid even to the movement of the
needle, the OT-120M Orchestral Tuner allows ideal tuning under any conditions, with an incredibly broad tuning spectrum that
covers the pitch ranges of all instruments.

The OT-120M is the newest model in Korg's lineup of tuners whose precision and functionality has made them the choice of
musicians around the world. The OT-120M features a dual display with both a VU-style meter for accurate pitch indication
and an LCD screen for excellent visibility.

Even with its advanced functionality, operation is simple, with intuitively understandable switches and dial. It provides a wide
range of pitches and a variety of tuning methods, including a Sound Back mode that lets you check the pitch both by eye and
ear. Housed in a compact package, the OT-120M orchestral tuner provides all the functionality you need for everything from
transposing instruments to historical temperaments.

The Sound Back feature will allow the piano tuner to play middle "C", and the meter will give the tone nearest to the one
being played. This tone can then be used to calibrate the meter and tune a piano which is way below standard pitch. This will
help to prevent breaking strings on very old pianos, and "Raising Pitch" will be easier to control.

Featuring a dual display with a VU-style meter for accurate pitch indication plus an LCD screen

The dual display of the OT-120M provides a VU-style meter to guarantee high-precision tuning as well as an LCD screen that
shows not just the correct pitch, but also the sound output level, calibration, key or temperament, and much more at a glance.
Its broad range (A0-C8) provides instant coverage for all notes and ranges of wind, string, and keyboard instruments. The
response of the needle to an input sound can be adjusted over three levels, from quick response for rapid tuning to slow
response for careful tuning. Calibration can be adjusted over an exceptionally wide range to support any concert pitch.

Versatile tuning methods include Auto/Manual modes and Sound Back mode

You can choose from two tuning modes: Auto mode in which the pitch of a single note played on your instrument is detected
automatically, or Manual mode in which the desired pitch can be specified in detail. A reference tone can be sounded, allowing
two or more musicians to tune simultaneously. The sound output level can be adjusted in two levels, covering situations
ranging from small studios to halls.

In addition, Sound Back mode detects the pitch that is input via the included contact mic to the input jack, and sounds the closest
reference pitch from the built-in speaker. Since the meter also operates, you can verify the pitch by both eye and ear, which
allows you to hone your sense of pitch and to tune more accurately. The built-in mic is ideal for pitch measurement of any
acoustic instrument.

Broad support for transposing instruments and historical temperaments

As a convenience for transposing instruments, twelve keys including both sharps and flats are supported.
The Multi Temperament function provides eight frequently-used historical temperaments, making the OT-120M the ideal choice
for use with specific classical and other tunings.

Features multiple scales (12 equal tempered, Pythagorean, Mean tone E flat/D sharp, Werckmeister III, Kirnberger III, Kellner,
Vallotti, Young), and an included external contact microphone.
